CAMBRIDGE - Baseball Ontario, today announced the 2023 R. Jack Middlemass Scholarship recipient, Sophie LeVasseur (Ottawa).

The Middlemass Scholarship was inspired by Jack's love for baseball and its athletes. The fund assists aspiring young people in pursuit of post-second education.

Sophie, a triple-A ball player in Ottawa, is also a member of the Ontario Women’s baseball Team.

In June, Sophie trained with the US Women Baseball National Team – MLB Elite Program in Florida for 18U (Jackie Robinson Stadium, Vero Beach) and is currently playing in Kentucky, USA for the National Baseball Competition for the National USA.

Over the past year, Sophie was involved with the Blue Jays Care Foundation, organizing a series of programs for kids with challenges and is continuing to offer the courses during the summer session.  She is also a coach with kids of various ages, teaching the basic baseball rules.

Sophie haa extensive community involvement, from Parliamentary Page at Queen’s Park to provide support to Veterans of WWII.

Presently, Sophie is finishing with her family thier next book on 100 of the most remarkable women in Canada, providing guidance to young girls about success and commitment to society.

Summary of Sophie's baseball history

  • Triple A Team – Ottawa Nepean Canadians (only girl my age in Eastern Ontario to play at this level with the boys since 2021)
  • Team Ontario – provincial level for elite baseball in the province and candidate for the national baseball team this year (2021-2023)
  • Selected – US National Women Baseball Team training camp – U16 (2022).  This year, training for U18 in Florida (June 2023)
  • USA Squad – Major League Baseball – U16 (2022).   Will be with U18 this year.
  • Double A team – Bytown Dodgers (only girl in Eastern Ontario to play at this level with the boys 2018-2020)
  • Bat Girl – baseball for the Ottawa Champions and Titans (summer 2017-2023) and responsible for the management of the dugout for the players
