Umpire Screening Requirements

UMPIRE SCREENING REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the online and in-person requirements by level, umpires 18 years and older must complete additional screening requirements in order to have their Baseball Ontario umpire certification activated.

Risk CATEGORIES

Umpires are assigned a Risk Category by their Local Association as outlined below:

  • Level 1 Risk - Umpires who are never alone with children or vulnerable individuals, and only interact on the field of play in the duty to the game
  • Level 2 Risk – Umpires in the Baseball Canada National Umpires Program who are not Clinicians.
  • Level 3 Risk – Umpire leaders (UIC’s, Clinicians, Supervisors, etc) who work with children under the age of 18.

Your screening requirements vary by your assigned Risk Category.   Find your category below for a checklist of your requirements.   If you are unsure of your assigned Risk Category, contact your Local Association.

SCREENING CHECKLIST for Risk Level 1

Most umpires will be assigned as Risk Level 1, and must:

  • Once Only - Complete the Safe Sport Training module or Abuse Awareness for Adults through ONDeck
  • Annually – Complete the Volunteer Screening Direction
  • Annually – Complete the Volunteer Screening Disclosure Form

 SCREENING CHECKLIST for Risk Level 2 And Risk Level 3 Born After 2/28/86

All umpires assigned as Risk Level 2 must:

  • Once Only - Complete the Safe Sport Training module or Abuse Awareness for Adults through ONDeck
  • Annually – Complete the Volunteer Screening Direction
  • Annually – Complete the Volunteer Screening Disclosure Form
  • Every 3 Years - Complete and submit a CPIC or EPIC background check through your local police service, or through Sterling Backcheck online

SCREENING CHECKLIST for Risk Level 3 Born before 2/28/86

All umpires assigned as Risk Level 3 must:

  • Once Only - Complete the Safe Sport Training module or Abuse Awareness for Adults through ONDeck
  • Annually – Complete the Volunteer Screening Direction
  • Annually – Complete the Volunteer Screening Disclosure Form
  • Once Only – complete and submit a Vulnerable Sector Check through your local police service
  • Every 3 Years After - Complete a CPIC or EPIC background check through your local police service, or through Sterling Backcheck online

SUBMITTING DOCUMENTS

If you chose to manage your screening through your Local Association when you completed the Volunteer Screening Direction form,  you will complete their Disclosure Form and submit any needed screening results documents directly to them.

If you chose to manage your screening through Baseball Ontario, any required original documents can be sent to:
