“Where History Meets the Game”: Inside the 2026 OBA Jim Lutton Hall of Fame House League Tournaments

An interview with Scott Crawford

Each summer, the quiet charm of St. Marys transforms into a hub of youth baseball, as teams from across the province gather at the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum for the Ontario Baseball Association’s Jim Lutton Hall of Fame House League Tournaments.

For Scott Crawford, the event represents far more than just games—it’s a celebration of community, history, and the love of baseball.

From Humble Beginnings to a Summer Staple

“The tournaments have evolved tremendously,” Crawford explains. “What started as one small event has grown into several large tournaments throughout the summer.”

That growth reflects both demand and reputation—proof that something special is happening in St. Marys.

A Setting Unlike Any Other

What separates this tournament from others? Crawford doesn’t hesitate.

“It’s where it’s held,” he says. “You’re playing at the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum—a beautiful 32-acre, park-like setting with four incredible ballfields, walking trails, and nature all around.”

And then there’s a local celebrity of sorts.

“We even have an osprey that lives on the light posts at Rotary Field. Not many tournaments can say that.”

Why Teams Keep Coming Back

Year after year, teams return—and for good reason.

“It’s well run, it’s fun, it’s outside the big city, and the fields are outstanding,” Crawford says. “That combination keeps people coming back.”

A Major Boost for the Local Game

The tournament plays a key role in the local baseball ecosystem.

“It allows St. Marys Minor Ball to host teams from towns and cities that might never otherwise visit,” Crawford notes. “It also gives our local umpires valuable experience—they’re working a high volume of games and improving every time they step on the field.”

More Than Just Baseball

Beyond the diamond, the tournament energizes the entire town.

“It brings excitement, entertainment, and a real tourism buzz,” says Crawford. “You don’t often see teams and families from all over Ontario coming to a small town like St. Marys—but they do for this.”

That influx matters.

“We’re talking thousands of people over the course of the tournaments. Local businesses—restaurants, shops—they really feel that boost.”

Powered by Volunteers

Behind the scenes, volunteers make everything possible.

“They’re the key to everything running smoothly,” Crawford emphasizes. “They help with field maintenance, run concessions, and even guide teams through the museum for historical tours. Without them, this doesn’t happen.”

Growing Community Pride

Support from the community continues to build each year.

“More people are volunteering, more are contributing financially, and there’s just more excitement overall,” Crawford says. “Baseball has a long history here, and people are proud of it.”

Built on Passion—and Purpose

At its core, the tournament’s success comes down to one thing: dedication.

“The hard work of Jim Koenigsberger and the volunteers has kept this going,” Crawford says. “At the end of the day, it’s all about the kids—making sure they play ball and have fun.”

What Players Will Remember

For participants, the experience goes far beyond wins and losses.

“They’ll remember playing the best game in the world, making friends, and having fun,” Crawford says. “And they’ll also learn about the history of baseball in Canada.”

Moments That Matter Most

Ask Crawford about his favourite memories, and his answer is simple.

“It’s seeing the kids high-five after a great play. Smiling. That’s what it’s about. It’s not about winning—it’s about loving the game and getting a little better each day.”

A Hidden Piece of Canadian History

One thing many visitors don’t realize?

“Baseball in Canada dates back to the 1700s,” Crawford points out. “This tournament gives players a chance to connect with that history while they’re playing the game themselves.”

In One Sentence

When asked to sum it all up, Crawford delivers it perfectly:

“It’s fun, exciting, historic—and absolutely worth signing up for.”
